WINDOWS LIVE MAIL INSTRUCTIONS

Note: The Windows Live Mail program is a simple e-mail program created by Microsoft and is basically the same as the Windows Mail program that came free with Windows Vista or the old Outlook Express program that came free with Windows XP. You must now download & install the Windows Live Mail program yourself, unless you buy a new computer that already has it installed.

1) Double-click on the Windows Live Mail  icon on the “desktop.”  (Or click on Start, then on All Programs, then on Windows Live, then on Windows Live Mail.)

TO QUICKLY CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY NEW MESSAGES: 

1) Click on the Sync button at the top of the Windows Live Mail program window. 

TO SEND A NEW MESSAGE:

1)  Click on the New button. Click on the Maximize button to make the new e-mail composition window full-screen.

Note: The Maximize button 1  is the tiny button that is just to the left of the X or Close button in the upper right-hand corner of the new e-mail composition window.

2) To open your Address Book, which is now called the Contacts list, in a small window, click on the To: button. This button is just to the left of the white box where the recipient’s name goes.

3) Scroll down and click on a name, then click on the To: ->   button (the button at the bottom of the window).

Note: To select multiple names, hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard, then click once on each name. Release the Ctrl key when you are finished selecting the names.

4) Click on  the OK button at the bottom of the window. 

5) Click into the Subject box and type a subject.

6) Click into the large message area box below and type your message.

7) Click on the Send button at the upper left.

8) To see if your message was sent, click on the Sent Items folder on the left. (To return to the messages in the Inbox when you are done, click on the Inbox folder on the left.)

TO READ A MESSAGE:

1) Click on the Inbox icon on the left (actually, the Windows Live Mail program should automatically go to the Inbox when you open Windows Live Mail.)

2) Click on the message “header,” which contains the Subject, Sender’s name, Date, etc. of the message, on the right.

3) Read the text of the message at the bottom. (If you don’t see the text, double-click on the message header on the right.)

4) To reply to or forward a message, click on the Reply or Forward buttons, respectively, at the top of the Windows Live Mail window. If you are replying to a message, the sender’s name will automatically go in the Recipient’s box. If you are forwarding a message, then see the instructions above (steps 2 through 4 in the previous section) for addressing a new e-mail message.

TO DELETE A MESSAGE:

1) Click once on the message header, then click on the Delete button at the top (or press the Delete key on the keyboard). Click on Yes.

2) Periodically, you should empty the Deleted items folder. To do so, right-click on the Deleted items folder, then click on Empty ‘Deleted items’ folder.

3) Click on Yes.

TO ADD A NEW PERSON TO YOUR ADDRESS BOOK:

1) Click on the Contacts  button at the lower left.

2) Click on New at the top left.

3) Type in the person’s first name, last name,  e-mail address and any other information you want. (Use the Tab key on the keyboard to get from box to box, or just click into the box you want.)

4) Click into the Personal e-mail: box, type the person’s e-mail address, then click on the Add Contact button at the bottom.

5) To send a message to the new contact, scroll down in the Contacts list to the new contact, then click once on the name. Then click on the E-mail button at the top of the Contacts window. This will open a new e-mail composition window with that recipient’s name in the To: box.

TO EDIT AN ENTRY IN YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS BOOK:

1) Click on the Contacts button at the bottom left.

2) Click once on the name you want to change, then click on the Edit button at the top.

3) Click on Contact at the left. Make the changes you want, then click on the Save button at the bottom.

TO SEND AN ATTACHMENT:

1) Click on New button. 

2) Click on the Maximize button  1 to make the e-mail composition window full-screen. (The Maximize button is just to the left of the X or Close button in the upper right-hand corner of the window.)

3) To select a recipient, click on the To: button. (This button is just to the left of the box where the recipient’s name goes.) This will open your Contacts list in a small window.

4) Scroll down and click on a name, then click on the To: ->   button (the button at the bottom left of the window).

Tip: To select multiple names, hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard, then click on each name. Release the Ctrl key when you are finished selecting the recipients you want.

5) Click on  the OK button at the bottom of the window. 

6) Click on the Attach button at the top.

7) Click on the Down Arrow next to whatever is in the Look in: box, then scroll up or down to find the My Scans, My Pictures, My Documents or whichever folder contains the file you want to attach.

8) Scroll down or sideways to find the file you want to attach.

9) Click once on the file (for example,  Image_0006.jpg). The .jpg “extension” after the file name tells the computer that this is an image file.

10) Click on the Open button.

11) Type a message in the message area of the e-mail composition window (optional).

12) Type a subject in the Subject: box (optional).

13) Click on the Send button at the upper left.

TO VIEW PICTURE ATTACHMENTS:

Note: Normally, you can scroll down in the text area of the received e-mail and see the picture(s) within the body of the text area. Use this procedure if you cannot see the picture(s).

1) Double-click on the attached file (the file is next to the tiny Paper Clip icon).  An attached file will have a file name such as:  Image_0006.jpg or BabyPix.gif. (The last three characters on these file names, such as .jpg, .gif, .tif and .wmf, signify that these are image files.)

2) Click on Open.

TO SAVE THE IMAGE FILE TO YOUR COMPUTER:

1) Right-click on the attached file (the attached file is next to the tiny Paper Clip icon), then click on Save as (if there is only one attachment) or Save all (if there is more than one attachment).

2) Click on the Down Arrow next to whatever is in the Save in: box, then click on My Pictures or wherever you want to save this attachment.

3) Click on the Save button.

4) Double-click on the My Pictures folder, or wherever you saved the attachment to.

5) Double-click on the file you want to open, such as the Image_0006.jpg file.

6) If the file is a picture, you can print the picture by clicking on File, then on Print.

TO RENAME  A FILE:

1) Right-click on the file name, such as Image_0006.jpg.

2) Type in the new name for the file, such as Grandchild.jpg, then click anywhere else on the screen. Be sure to keep the part after the period or dot (i.e., .jpg).

Note: Do not use slashes  ( / )  in the file name! Slashes are one of the forbidden characters in file names in Windows. For example, do not type the date as  12/09 or 12/1/2009. Use hyphens instead, e.g., 12-09 or 12-1-09.

TO CREATE A NEW FOLDER:

Note: This is how you can create a new folder to store e-mail messages from, for example, your friends.

1) Click on the tiny Down Arrow button next to the New button at the top left, then click on Folder.

2) Click on ATT.net ([email protected]), or whatever the name of your e-mail account is.

3) Type the name for the new folder in the Folder name: box, such as E-mail from Friends.

4) Click on the OK button.

5) You can then click & drag e-mail messages from your friends in the Inbox to the new E-mail from Friends folder on the left.
