TO UPDATE YOUR NORTON INTERNET SECURITY OR NORTON ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS TO NIS 2007/NAV 2007:

Note: You may need to remove the Spy Sweeper program or any other programs that conflicts with the Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus programs first if you want to install the latest version of the Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus program. You will be told of any programs you need to remove during the installation process. To remove the Spy Sweeper program or any other program, you can usually click on Start, then on All Programs or Programs, then on Webroot (or the name of the program or manufacturer), then on Spy Sweeper (or the name of the program), then on Uninstall Spy Sweeper (or the name of the program).

Note 2: “Symantec” and “Norton” mean the same thing in these instructions. (Symantec is the manufacturer of Norton products.)

Note 3: Norton Internet Security contains Norton AntiVirus, so you don't need both. (Norton Internet Security also contains Norton Personal Firewall, Norton AntiSpam, and a few other programs that altogether protect your computer against viruses, spyware, hackers, and other unfortunate occurrences.)

Norton SystemWorks (in step # 9 below) contains Norton AntiVirus, Norton Utilities, Norton GoBack and a few other programs. Norton Utilities cleans up your Registry (two very large files that contain the settings for your software and hardware) and fixes problems with the hard disk. Norton GoBack allows you to restore your computer to how it was on a previous date and time if you install a program that damages your computer. You don't need to install this program because Windows XP has a System Restore program that works just fine.

1) Open the Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton AntiVirus (NAV) program.

2) Click on the Renew button. (Or click on the appropriate button on any window that pops up on the screen telling you that your subscription has expired.)

3) Click on Next.

4) Check your “Subscription Status” to see if your Norton program has expired or will expire soon. If it has expired or is about to expire, then continue with the following steps. Otherwise, click on the Skip button to skip the renewal process and just get the updates for your current version of Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security. This means that you can skip the rest of the steps below and go to our instructions for running the LiveUpdate sub-program.

5) Click to select: ¤ Norton AntiVirus 2005/2006 or  ¤ Norton Internet Security 2005/2006 (or whatever your current Norton product is).

6) Select your country (for example, United States).

7) Select your language (for example, English).

8) Click on the Continue button.

9) Select one of the following upgrade or renewal options:

Norton Internet Security 2007/Norton SystemWorks 2006 Basic Upgrade Bundle - $59.99.

Norton AntiVirus 2007 Upgrade - $39.99.

Renewal of Norton AntiVirus 2005/2006  - $29.99. (This may cost more for older versions of Norton AntiVirus.)

10) Click on the Buy Now button under the option you want above.

11) Click on Buy Download if you want to download and install the upgrade right away,  or click on Buy Package if you want the program CD or DVD to be sent to you in the mail.  (We are going to assume that you want to download the upgrade in these instructions. Most of the following steps are the same in either case.)

12) If you are asked to update your order to a 2-year subscription, either click on Yes or No thanks, proceed to checkout with original order. (There is an additional charge for a 2-year subscription, of course.)

13) Click on the tiny Trash Can icon if you want to remove the Extended Download Service (this allows you to easily re-download the Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus update if you fail to do it the first time). You can save $7.99 if you remove this.

14) Type in your personal data (first name, last name, e-mail address, etc.) in the appropriate boxes.

15) Type your credit card info in the appropriate boxes.

16) Type your desired password in the Password box. The password must be between 4 and 15 characters long.

17) Click on the Continue button.

18) Click on the View Invoice button if you want to see your invoice for this order. Click on Print Invoice if you want to print it out.

19) Click on the Complete Your Order button.

20) Click on the Download button next to Norton Internet Security 2007 or Norton AntiVirus 2007, depending on whether you want the full suite of programs in Norton Internet Security (i.e., Norton AntiVirus, Norton AntiSpam, Norton Personal Firewall, Norton Confidential, etc.) or just the Norton AntiVirus program.

21) If you receive a warning about needing to click on the Install ActiveX Control button (the extra-wide button at the top of the Internet Explorer window, which is above the web page area), click on the button.

22) Wait for the gold progress bar to slowly inch its way across to the right edge. It will say, “Extracting files” under this progress bar and show the files that it is installing.

23) Click on the I agree button when it comes up on the screen. This is to agree to all the legalese in the License Agreement.

24) Click on Next. (Don’t install the Yahoo Toolbar, unless you want this on your Internet Explorer window.)

25) Click on Skip Scan or Start Scan to scan for viruses before you proceed with the installation process. Some viruses can prevent the installation of NIS or NAV.

26) Wait a few moments.

27) When the computer asks if you would like to restart the computer, click on the Yes button.

28) Wait a few minutes for the installation to continue.

29) Click on  ¤ Restart Windows Now (recommended).

30) Click on the Finish button.

31) When the computer finishes restarting and the desktop with all of your icons appears again, wait long enough for the following options window to appear:

¤ Sign in to an existing Norton Account (if you’ve done the update process before and already have an account with Symantec).

¤ Create a Norton Account (if you’ve never created an account with Symantec).

If you selected the former, type your e-mail address and password in the appropriate boxes. If you forgot your password, click on the Forgot Password link. Your password will then be sent to your e-mail address you used when you created your Norton account.

If you selected the latter, type in your personal data, and select a Security Question (such as “What is your favorite sport?”). Then type the answer to the Security Question in the appropriate box.

32) Click on Next.

33) Click on Finish.

34) Click to run the LiveUpdate sub-program. This will update the list of new viruses (there are approximately 10 new viruses introduced every day) and install program updates to the various sub-programs that make up the NIS and NAV programs.

35) Click on Next.

36) You should then see a list of the available updates, such as the Norton AntiVirus Virus Definitions List (the list of new viruses), the Symantec Security Software Update, the Symantec Trusted Applications List (Norton will automatically allow programs on this list to access the Internet), and so on.

37) Click on Next.

38) Click on Finish.

39) Click on  ¤ Restart your computer now.

40) Click on OK.

Note: Be sure to wait long enough each time you restart the computer for the NIS or NAV program to display the next window in the installation process.

41) When the Norton Protection Center icon appears on the Task Bar, which is just to the left of the System Tray (where the clock is) in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, right-click on the icon, then click on Show Norton Status in System Tray.  (This will free up valuable real estate on the Task Bar.)

Note: The Norton Protection Center icon is a circular gold icon with an oscilloscope trace on it.

42) See our instructions for running a scan, running the LiveUpdate sub-program, etc. by clicking on this link.

Note: Prices are subject to change without notice. The procedure for renewing your subscription to NIS or NAV is subject to frequent changes without notice. Please make the appropriate changes to these instructions as needed.
