BASIC TURN ON/TURN OFF INSTRUCTIONS

iMac Intel Core 2 Duo

Note: Most sections of these instructions will work with many other new models of Macs, too.

TURNING THE IMAC ON:

1) Press the Power button on the back of the iMac. This button will be near the left edge of the frame, as you look at the iMac from the front.

[2) Type your password in the Password: box (if you or your computer person set one up for you), then press the Return key on the keyboard.]

3) Wait until the spinning blue “donut” disappears and the icons on the Desktop appear.

4) Open your e-mail program or whichever program you want.

TURNING THE IMAC OFF:

1)  Click on the gray Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

2) Click on Shut Down….

3) Click on the blue Shut Down button.

4) Wait for the iMac to turn OFF.

PUTTING THE COMPUTER TO SLEEP:

1) Normally, the iMac should automatically go to sleep after about 15 minutes of inactivity. (See below for instructions on how to change this time.)

WAKING UP THE COMPUTER:

1) Press any key on the keyboard.

2) Wait a few seconds for the computer to wake up.

CHANGING THE SLEEP SETTINGS:

1)  Click on the gray Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

2) Click on System Preferences….

3) Click on Energy Saver.

4) Under “Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:,” click & drag the slider button to the right to increase the time before the computer goes to sleep, or to the left to decrease the time before the computer goes to sleep.

Note: A good setting here is 20 minutes. If you don’t want the computer to go to sleep at all, click & drag the slider button all the way over to the right (to Never).

5) Under “Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for:,” click & drag the slider button to the right to increase the time before the display goes to sleep, or to the left to decrease the time before the display goes to sleep.

Note: A good setting here is 15 minutes. If you don’t want the display to go to sleep at all, click & drag the slider button all the way over to the right (to Never).

Note 2: If you want to change the settings for both the computer and display back to the factory default setting, click on the Restore Defaults button.

6) Be sure that there is a check mark in the box next to: ü Put the Hard Disk to sleep when possible, if you want to reduce your electricity consumption and lengthen the life span of the internal hard drive.

7) Click on the Screen Saver button, then click & drag the slider button to the right to increase the time before the screen saver comes on, or to the left to decrease the time before the screen saver comes on.

Note: A good setting here is 10 minutes. If you don’t want the screen saver to come on at all, click & drag the slider button all the way over to the right (to Never).

8) Click on the Show All button to return to the System Preferences window, or click on the red X button in the upper left-hand corner to close both the Energy Saver window and the System Preferences window.
